The crowd at the stadium in Bengaluru were stunned to hear at the toss, from RCB captain Virat Kohli, that Gayle was not playing in today's Match 20 of Indian Premier League 2015 (IPL 8).
World Cup winning Australian paceman Mitchell Starc replaced Gayle in the Playing XI. Starc arrived in Bengaluru a couple of days back after missing the start of the tournament due to a knee problem. RCB could have included Gayle at the expense of South African batsman Rilee Rossouw, but did not.
Even the TV commentators were surprised to see Gayle missing from the line-up. One of them confirmed that the West Indian was fit and there were no injury issues.
In the last game at the same venue, against Mumbai Indians (MI), Gayle played one of the slowest IPL innings - scratching to when they were chasing 210 from 20 overs. Many wondered whether he was punished for that. MI won the game by 18 runs to get their first points in the tournament.
Fans were upset with RCB team management that they were not able to watch Gayle's big hits today. Many RCB supporters had come to the venue only to see the tall Jamaican.
