Akeem Stewart Biography

He started athletics at age five, introduced to the sport by his father. His first competition in Para athletics was in 2013, also in Medellin. His father, Wayne, remains a significant influence on his career.

Injuries and Challenges

Throughout his career, he has faced numerous injuries. He sustained a knee injury before the 2023 Parapan American Games but still won gold in the F64 discus throw. In 2022 and 2023, he dealt with shoulder and finger injuries. Earlier, he had knee and finger injuries between 2011 and 2016.

Milestones

He became the first male athlete from Trinidad and Tobago to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games, achieving this feat in the F44 javelin throw at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. In 2015, he won gold in the F44 discus at the Parapan American Games in Toronto.

Awards and Recognition

He was flag bearer for Trinidad and Tobago at the opening ceremonies of both the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. In July 2020, he received Tobago's Medal of Honour for his contributions to sport. He was named Male Athlete of the Year by the Tobago Falcons Athletics Club in 2016 and 2019.

In May 2017, he carried the Queen's Baton during its relay ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He also received a Special Recognition award at the 2019 Tobago House of Assembly Sport Awards.
