Since 2018, Carolito has been coached by Cristian Espindola from Chile. He trains for about five hours a day at the facilities of the National Stadium in Santiago, Chile. His dedication to training has been evident throughout his career.
In August 2023, Carolito underwent eye surgery, causing him to miss two months of training. He made a strong comeback at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile. His resilience and determination have been key factors in his success.
Carolito became the second athlete to win a Paralympic gold medal for Chile and the first in swimming when he triumphed in the men's S2 100m backstroke at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. His three medals in Tokyo made him the first Chilean athlete to win more than one medal at the Games.
In 2021, Carolito received the Best of the Best Award in Para sport from the Chilean Sports Journalists Circle. He was also a flag bearer for Chile at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo and the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru. In 2018, he won the National Sports Award in Chile and was named Para Athlete of the Year by both the Sports Journalists' Circle and the Chilean Olympic Committee.
Carolito had initially planned to retire after the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. However, after winning three medals, including one gold, he reconsidered his decision. "I always said that I would retire after Tokyo," he mentioned. His daughter encouraged him to continue until he no longer enjoyed it or felt competitive.
In 2020, Carolito declined an invitation from the United States to join their national Para swimming team. Despite being offered an apartment in New York, training facilities, medical staff, and a monthly wage higher than what he received in Chile, he chose to stay loyal to his country. "This is not about money," he said. "I love my country for better or for worse."
Looking ahead, Carolito aims to compete at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His dedication and passion for swimming continue to drive him forward as he prepares for this significant event.
Carolito's journey is a testament to his perseverance and love for his sport and country. His achievements have not only brought pride to Chile but also inspired many aspiring athletes worldwide.
