Alex Portal, a dedicated athlete and student, has been making waves in the world of Para swimming. Born in Yvelines, France, he began swimming at age five at the CN Pecq swimming club, where his grandmother was president. By age seven, he was competing with the Cercle des Nageurs de l'Ouest club.

Balancing his sporting career with education, Portal began studying at the Leonardo da Vinci Graduate School of Engineering [ESILV] in Paris in 2022. The school’s adaptations, such as video classes and flexible time management, have been instrumental in helping him manage both his studies and his sporting commitments.
Portal trains rigorously with 10 water sessions and three gym sessions each week. His dedication to training is evident in his performances and achievements.
One of Portal's most memorable moments came when he won gold in the SM13 200m individual medley at the 2022 World Championships in Madeira, Portugal. This victory stands out as a highlight in his career.
In addition to his individual successes, Portal's younger brother Kylian has also made a mark in Para swimming. Kylian represented France at the world championships in 2022 and 2023, securing third place in the S13 400m freestyle at the 2023 edition in Manchester, England.
Looking ahead, Portal aims to win medals in each of his four events at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. He also dreams of sharing a podium with his brother Kylian at the Games. "My dream is to become a champion," he said.
Portal draws inspiration from several sources, including his family, coach Guillaume Benoist, and swimming friends. He also looks up to US swimmer Michael Phelps and French swimmer Jeremy Stravius.
His guiding philosophy is inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.: "Believe in your dreams and they may become true; believe in yourself and they will surely become true."
Portal's talent has not gone unnoticed. In 2018, he was named Parasport Male Hope of the Year in the Ile-de-France region of France. This recognition highlights his potential and dedication to the sport.
Managing both sports and studies is challenging, but Portal has found a way to balance both effectively. The support from ESILV has been crucial in this regard.
The bond between Alex and Kylian extends beyond sibling rivalry. Both brothers share a dream of competing together at the Paralympic Games. "Both of us at the Paralympic Games in Paris would be my biggest dream," Alex said.
As September 2024 approaches, all eyes will be on Alex Portal as he aims to achieve his goals at the Paralympic Games. His journey so far has been marked by dedication, hard work, and an unwavering belief in himself.
