Alexandra Truwit Biography

She started swimming at an early age. Her mother, Jody, swam for Yale University. Following in her mother's footsteps, she also competed in non-Para swimming for Yale. She holds degrees in Cognitive Science and Economics from Yale University.

Shark Attack Incident

During a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands in 2023, she and her friend Sophie Pilkinton were attacked by a shark. Both were competitive swimmers for Yale University. Their training helped them survive the attack. They had to swim 50 to 75 yards back to their boat after the shark bit through her foot.

Transition to Para Swimming

The shark attack did not end her love for water. She began competing in Para swimming three months after the incident. She stated, "Water and swimming were always my first loves." Overcoming the trauma of the attack was challenging, but she did not want to lose her passion for swimming.

Inspiration and Support

Her prosthetist introduced her to US Para swimmer Jessica Long. Long became an important figure during her transition to Para swimming. She described Long as a significant source of strength and self-acceptance. Long's confidence and openness about her prosthetics inspired her greatly.
