8 overage shuttlers disqualified in junior natl badminton tourney

Dehradun, Oct 16 (UNI) Eight shuttlers were disqualified after the medical check-ups proved they were over age in 21st National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship here today.

L C Gupta, Honorary Secretary of Badminton Association of India, said that two players each from Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram, Goa and Punjab were disqualified. He said the Organising Committee after recieving complaints against 17 players had conducted medical check-ups at Doon Hospital yesterday out of which eight were confirmed over age.

Gupta said that to avoid such incidents in future tournaments a recommendation would be placed in the BAI Annual General Meeting asserting that birth certificates issued by the schools not be considered the only criteria to determine the age of the players.

He said that in all doubtful cases random medical check ups should be conducted during any tournaments. After ascertaining age of any players a database would be maintained that would be helpful in future tournaments also, he added.
