Akane Yamaguchi Returns As Top Seed At Australian Open 2026 After 9 Years

Akane Yamaguchi returns as top seed for the SATHIO GROUP Australian Open 2026, nine years after finishing runner-up to Nozomi Okuhara in 2017. She arrives days after losing the Indonesia Open final to Ahn Se-young, yet remains a strong favourite in Sydney.

The world No.3 starts against Chinese Taipei player Huang Ching Ping on Wednesday. Yamaguchi has played four finals in five weeks. She won the Thailand Open on 17 May, and finished runner-up at the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open, underlining a packed recent schedule.

Yamaguchi Returns as Top Seed at AO 2026

Only Pusarla V. Sindhu and Pornpawee Chochuwong join her from the current top 10 in the women’s singles draw. With Chochuwong placed in the bottom half, Pusarla stands as Yamaguchi’s toughest rival in the top 16 section at the Australian event.

In men’s singles, Chinese Taipei teammates Chou Tien Chen and Lin Chun-Yi lead the field. Their chances improved after withdrawals by fourth seed Loh Kean Yew and sixth seed Ayush Shetty. Indonesia also lost seeded men’s doubles pairs Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Raymod Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin.

Yamaguchi's Hard Luck At Indonesia Open

Yamaguchi’s latest defeat came against Ahn Se-young at the Indonesia Open. World No.1 Ahn beat her 2-0, 23-19, 21-12, in Jakarta on 7 June, Korea time. Ahn needed only 39 minutes to complete the win on the BWF World Tour stage. 'I could not stand up to the badminton empress,' Yamaguchi told the media after her match against the South Korean star shuttler.

Ahn has now won the Indonesia Open for a second straight year. It marked her fifth title of the 2026 season, after triumphs in Malaysia, India, the Asian Championship and Singapore. The result highlighted the current rivalry at the top of women’s singles.

Ahn extended her head-to-head lead over Yamaguchi to 20 wins and 15 losses. Her last defeat to the Japanese player came in the Chinese Masters semi-finals in September last year. Since that loss, Ahn has recorded five straight victories in this match-up.

In the Indonesia Open final, the first game stayed tight. At 21-21, Ahn struck with sharp attacks to close it. In the second game, she pulled clear from 7-7 to 16-9. Yamaguchi closed to 16-12 before Ahn finished with five straight points.
