All England Open 2025: Lakshya Sen, Malvika Bansod Enter Second Round; HS Prannoy, Tanisha-Ashwini Bow Out

Lakshya Sen and Malvika Bansod progressed to the second round of the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships 2025 following hard-fought wins in their respective singles matches in Birmingham on Tuesday (March 11).

Lakshya, ranked 15th in the world, came from behind to defeat Chinese Taipei's world No. 37, SU Li Yang, with a scoreline of 13-21, 21-17, 21-15 in the men's singles opening round match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes on court 2 at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.

The 23-year-old from Almora will face Indonesia's third seed Jonatan Christie next in the second round on Thursday (March 13). Lakshya had defeated Christie en route to his fourth place finish at the Paris Olympics last year.

Malvika, on the other hand, booked her second round meeting with former world champion and third-seeded Japanese Akane Yamaguchi after stunning Singapore's Yeo Jia Min. The world number 28th ranked Indian defeated the number 12 ranked shuttler from Singapore with a scoreline of 21-13, 10-21, 21-17.

Meanwhile, it was end of the road as early as the first round for senior singles star HS Prannoy and a couple of doubles teams from the country at the ongoing BWF Super 1000 event in Birmingham on Tuesday (March 11).

Prannoy, a bronze medallist at the 2023 World Championships and Asian Games, struggled against France's Toma Junior Popov, who is ranked 17th. Prannoy fought for 53 minutes before going down 19-21, 16-21.

In the mixed doubles, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath had a tough outing against China's world No. 7 pair of Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui, losing 6-21, 15-21 in 51 minutes.

In women's doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa lost in straight games 22-20, 21-18 to Chinese Taipei's Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu in the opening round contest that lasted 43 minutes. Tanisha, however, will look to progress in the mixed doubles competition alongside Dhruv Kapila.

On Wednesday (March 12), two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, former world no.1 men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as well as women's duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will start their campaign in Birmingham.
