Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu made an early exit from the All England Open Badminton Championships 2025 with a three-game loss to Korea's Kim Ga Eun in the women's singles opeing round on Wednesday (March 12) in Birmingham.
The two-time Olympic medallist, who is returning after recovering from a hamstring injury, dropped a first-game lead to lose 21-19, 13-21, 13-21 to the world number 21 Kim in the women's singles first round match that lasted just over an hour at Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Sindhu raced to 20-12 lead in the opening game, but almost threw it away, allowing Kim to recover to 19-20 before eventually winning the game. From the second game, Sindhu's form dipped as Kim grew in confidence as the Korean went on to win the game and the match with two scores 21-13 each.
While it was yet another disappointing result for world number 16 Sindhu since her return to action earlier this year, three doubles pairs, including Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, brought some good news for Indian badminton with contrasting wins.
Seventh seeds Satwik-Chirag opened their campaign in Birmingham with 21-17, 21-15 win over Denmark's Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in the men's doubles match that lasted 40 minutes. The Indian duo will next face Chinese pair Xie Haonan and Weihan Zheng in the second round.
Women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also secured straight games win over Chinese Taipei duo Sung Shuo-yun and Yu Chien-huiin by a scoreline of 21-17, 21-13 in 48 minutes. Treesa-Gayatri pair will now face eighth seeds Kim Hye-jeong and Kong Hee-yong of South Korea.
In mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, however, progressed to the second round, prevailing 21-10, 17-21, 24-22 over Chinese Taipei's Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, ranked 41st. The duo will face fifth seeds Yan Zhe Feng and Ya Xin Wei of China next.
However, two other Indian doubles teams competing at the BWF Super 1000 tournament on Wednesday (March 12) crashed out in the opening round after straight games defeats against their respective opponents.
Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra went down without a fight against top seeds Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee of South Korea, losing the women's doubles opener by a scoreline of 9-21, 4-21 in just 27 minutes.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also suffered a straight games loss by a score of 17-21, 14-21 against Thailand's Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat in the mixed doubles opening round match that lasted 33 minutes. Here is a look at the results on Wednesday (March 12):
