Asian Games 2026: Indian Medal Prospects To Look Out For In Aichi Nagoya

Asian Games 2026: India has sent a strong 20-member badminton contingent to take part in Aichi-Nagoya. In the last Asian Games, the Indian Badminton contingent clinched three medals.

In 2023, the Indian badminton contingent clinched three medals. The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bagged the nation's first-ever Asian Games gold in the sport. Meanwhile, the men's team won a silver medal while HS Prannoy won a bronze medal in the men's singles.

Badminton at the Asian Games has an interesting story to tell. The sport started as a demonstration event at Tokyo in 1958. However, it became a regular competitive sporting event only in Jakarta in 1962.

India, however, took some time before they made their badminton debut in Tehran in 1972. But the good part is that despite a late debut, the Indian team had an immediate impact on the game. The Indian men's team, led by legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone, along with his teammate Dinesh Khanna, clinched a bronze medal at the men's team event.

It was a golden era for Indian badminton, and when the caravan shifted to New Delhi in 1982, national icon Syed Modi won a historic bronze medal in the men's singles. India also picked up bronze medals in the men's team, men's doubles (Leroy D'Sa and Pradeep Gandhe), and mixed doubles (Leroy D'Sa and Kanwal Thakar Singh).

However, after that, there was a drought of medals in the multi-sport event for nearly 28 years, under the dominance of Indonesia, China, and South Korea. In 2014, that drought ended with a women's team bronze at Incheon. This was followed by PV Sindhu's silver medal in 2018. However, the crowning moment of Indian badminton came in Hangzhou, where the Indian men's doubles pairing of Satwik and Chirag managed to win a gold medal, becoming the first Indian shuttlers to finish at the top in badminton at the Asian Games.

Asian Games 2026: Top Medal Contenders In Indian Badminton Contingent

Satwik/Chirag: All eyes will be once again on India's 'smash brothers', Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who will be spearheading the medal charge in India's doubles contingent. The duo capped off a rather turbulent year where their BWF calendar was largely affected by Satwik's shoulder injury. However, despite this rollercoaster year, the duo won the Singapore Open and China Masters as well.

PV Sindhu: Two-time Olympic medalist and current World No. 11, PV Sindhu arrives in Aichi Nagoya with only one aim: to convert her silver medal into gold. Being one of the most senior shuttlers on the side, Sindhu had a remarkable year in 2026, when she found a resurgence in the circuit after a long injury layoff due to a foot injury. With her physical fitness fully restored and under the tactical guidance of her coaching staff, she is working heavily on a more aggressive net-play strategy. Moreover, her high seeding ensures she will avoid early-round landmines.

Ayush Shetty: One of the giant killers in the circuit, Ayush Shetty is the next generation of badminton shuttlers who can handle the mantle of men's singles. Shetty recently grabbed headlines when he defeated Chinese heavyweight Shi Yuqi during the opening round of the BWF World Championships in New Delhi. However, with a pool comprising Alwi Farhan, Kodai Naroka and Leong Jun Hao in the fray, it will be exciting how Shetty fares against a talent pool from the same age group.

Treesa/Gayatri: Another pairing on whom all eyes will be is the women's doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. The duo became an overnight sensation after they managed to punch above their weight to deliver the only medal (bronze) at the BWF World Championships 2026. In their medal run, they defeated the sixth-seeded pairing of Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in the Round of 16. During the quarterfinals, the pair managed to thwart the challenge of reigning Olympic champion Jia Yifan and her elite partner Zhang Shuxian to secure a memorable bronze medal finish. Naturally, expectations will be once again on the duo as they look to recreate or even improve their chances at the Asiad.
