Asian Games 2026: Who Are the Major Hurdles in PV Sindhu Gold Quest?

New Delhi, September 11: PV Sindhu will look to cap a remarkable comeback season with an Asian Games gold medal when she takes the court in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with the Indian star heading into the continental showpiece with renewed confidence and momentum.

Sindhu's Asian Games journey has already produced two medals. She won bronze as part of India's women's team at the 2014 Games in Incheon before claiming a historic singles silver in Jakarta in 2018. Her 2018 campaign ended with a defeat to Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying, who was in exceptional form at the time.

The Hangzhou Games, however, proved disappointing for the former world No. 2 as she bowed out in the quarterfinals after losing to China's He Bingjiao in straight games.
Three years later, Sindhu will arrive in Japan with renewed ambitions. Her 2026 season has already marked a significant turnaround in fortunes. In June, she returned to the world's top 10 for the first time since 2023 following a strong run that included an impressive opening-round performance against Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan at the Indonesia Open Super 1000.

The biggest highlight of her comeback came at the Japan Open Super 750, where Sindhu ended a long title drought by lifting the trophy. She then produced another competitive run at the BWF World Championships, narrowly missing out on a quarterfinal place after a closely fought defeat to China's Wang Zhiyi.

With the Asian Games now firmly in sight, Sindhu also took a temporary break from competitive action following the World Championships, allowing herself time to recover and prepare for the demanding schedule ahead.

Asian Games 2026: Major Hurdles for PV Sindhu

Despite her resurgence, the road to gold will not be straightforward. Sindhu could encounter several of the world's leading players, against whom she has developed fierce rivalries over the years.

• An Se-young (0-8): The South Korean world No. 1 has been Sindhu's toughest recent opponent, winning all eight of their previous meetings.
• Wang Zhiyi (2-7): China's Wang holds the upper hand in their rivalry and recently defeated Sindhu in a three-game battle at the 2026 World Championships.
• Chen Yufei (7-11): Another heavyweight matchup, with Chen leading their overall head-to-head record. Sindhu did, however, register a recent walkover win over the Chinese star.
• Akane Yamaguchi (16-12): One of Sindhu's most closely contested rivalries, with the Indian holding the overall advantage. She also defeated Yamaguchi in straight games to win the 2026 Japan Open title on Japanese soil.
• Nozomi Okuhara (11-9): A rivalry synonymous with long, gruelling contests, Sindhu holds a narrow advantage over the Japanese former world champion.

With her ranking back in the top 20, an Asian Games gold medal can finally put a golden seal on her already glittering career.
