Indian badminton received a major boost on Sunday as Ayush Shetty captured his first BWF World Tour crown with a commanding straight-game win over Canada's Brian Yang in the men's singles final of the US Open Super 300.
Held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the 21-18, 21-13 victory marked a significant milestone for the 2023 junior world bronze medallist.

Shetty, who had already beaten Yang twice earlier this season at the Malaysia and Taipei Opens, made it a hat-trick of wins against the Canadian in a 47-minute contest. His impressive run to the title also featured a stunning semifinal comeback over tournament top seed Chou Tien Chen, showcasing his growing maturity on the international stage.
The final began with both players exchanging early blows, staying neck-and-neck until 6-all. However, fourth-seeded Shetty soon shifted gears, pulling ahead to an 11-6 lead at the mid-game interval thanks to a flurry of winners. Though Yang staged a brief fightback to level the scores at 16-16, the Indian responded with precision and poise, closing out the opening game with a leaping smash.
In the second game, Shetty quickly built a 7-2 advantage. While Yang managed to reduce the deficit momentarily, the Mangalore-born shuttler stayed composed, deploying clever variations and rock-solid defence to maintain his edge. A cross-court punch followed by a decisive smash sealed the match, and with it, Shetty's breakthrough moment at the World Tour level.
This triumph adds to a growing list of finals appearances for the 20-year-old, who was runner-up at the 2023 Odisha Masters Super 100, the 2023 Bahrain International, and the 2024 Dutch Open. Sunday's title, however, is by far the biggest of his career to date.
Meanwhile, it was a bittersweet day for Indian badminton as 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma's dream run came to an end in the women's singles final. Facing world No. 10 and top seed Beiwen Zhang of the USA, the unseeded teenager put up a spirited performance before going down 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in a 46-minute encounter. It was Tanvi's maiden appearance in a World Tour final, and her fearless display against a seasoned opponent promises a bright future.
While Sharma narrowly missed out on the title, her journey to the final at such a young age marks her as one to watch in the years ahead. As for Shetty, his victory signals the arrival of another serious contender from India on the global badminton circuit.
