Badminton Asia Championships 2026: Ayush Shetty Earns Silver In Maiden Appearance
Ayush Shetty claims historic silver at Badminton Asia Championships
Ayush Shetty ended his debut run with a silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in China on Sunday. The 20-year-old lost the men's singles final to World No. 2 Shi Yu Qi of China, 21-8, 21-10.
The Indian shuttler became the first player from India to win silver at the event. He is also the first Indian men's singles finalist at this tournament in 61 years, marking a rare high point for Indian badminton at continental level.

Final match dominated by Shi Yu Qi
Shetty struggled to match the control of the experienced Chinese player in the title clash. Shi took charge early in the first game. He allowed very few openings, keeping rallies tight and preventing the young Indian from building any real momentum.
The second game saw a better start from Ayush, who led 7-2 with a five-point cushion. However, he could not keep that pressure going for long. Shi Yu Qi adjusted his play, levelled the score at 7-7, and then pulled away to close out the match.
Wins over top-ranked players highlight big potential
Despite the final defeat, the tournament underlined Shetty's promise on the international stage. The youngster posed serious threats to the world's best players. On his way to the final, he defeated opponents ranked World No. 1, World No. 3 and World No. 7.
His run in China suggests a bright future for Indian badminton. Aged only 20, Ayush Shetty has already produced a historic performance. His debut campaign at the Badminton Asia Championships ended with a silver medal and valuable experience against elite opposition.
