Brazil To Host Para Badminton Event Before LA28

The 2028 World Championships will carry extra importance because of its place in the Paralympic cycle. Scheduled around six months before the Los Angeles Paralympics, the tournament will offer leading players a high-level test close to the Games. It will also help teams assess form, preparation and competitive readiness before the final stretch towards LA28.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said, "We are delighted to award the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2028 to Brazil."

She further added, "This reflects the country's growing strength in Para badminton and our commitment to expanding the sport globally. Positioned in the final phase of the Paralympic qualification period, just six months before the LA28 Paralympic Games, the championships will be a critical milestone for all players.

"It will provide a world-class platform for performance, preparation, and finalising readiness on the road to Los Angeles, while also reflecting our continued dedication to growing Para badminton in all regions."

For Brazil, the hosting decision is also significant beyond the tournament itself. It gives the country a global Para badminton showcase and places South America more firmly on the sport’s elite calendar. BWF said the event will support the development of Para badminton in the Pan American region.

Badminton Brazil Calls 2028 Opportunity 'Historic'

Badminton Brazil President José Roberto Santini Campos welcomed the decision and said the federation would work to deliver a landmark edition of the championships.

"The Brazilian Badminton Federation is absolutely thrilled with the selection of Brazil as the host nation for the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2028.

"We see this decision as a powerful testament to the BWF's confidence in our institutional work and in the exponential growth of Para badminton across Brazil and the wider Americas.

"Hosting a major milestone championships of this calibre in our region — the first since Guatemala in 2011 and now elevated by falling within a Paralympic Games cycle — is of paramount importance.

"We are incredibly proud to welcome the world and are fully committed to working tirelessly to deliver a truly historic championship."

The championship will bring together the world’s leading Para badminton players across classifications, with ranking points, momentum and Paralympic preparation all at stake. For the Americas, the São Paulo event offers a rare chance to stage a world-level Para badminton competition and build interest in the sport ahead of LA28.
