Canada Open 2023: Lakshya Sen enters final; PV Sindhu crashes out

Calgary, July 9: India's Lakshya Sen stormed into the men's singles final of Canada Open 2023 after defeating fourth seed Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in straight games at the Markin-MacPhail Centre in Calgary on Saturday (July 8) night.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallist Indian shuttler defeated the Japanese shuttler by a scoreline of 21-17, 21-14 in the semifinal match that lasted for 44 minutes on Court 1.

This will be the 21-year-old's 2nd appearance in the final of BWF World Tour Super 500 event and the world no. 19 Indian will be up against reigning All England champion Li Shi Feng of China on Sunday (July 9) night.

While Sen kept India's challenge at the Canada Open alive, top shuttler and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu crashed out in the women' singles event following straight games loss to top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

The former World Champion from India suffered a 14-21, 15-21 loss to reigning World Champion from Japan in the women's singles semifinal match that lasted for 43 minutes on Court 1. The Japanese top seed will now face second seed Rathcanok Intanon of Thailand in the final on Sunday (July 9) night.

Earlier on Thursday (July 6), men's doubles pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala couldn't cross the pre-quarterfinal stage, going down 9-21, 11-21 to Indonesian second seed and world number 7 Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

On the opening two days, former champion B Sai Praneeth lost via straight games 12-21 17-21 to Coelho. Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also exited in the first round, losing 12-21 3-21 against Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the women's singles event.

Parupalli Kashyap and women's doubles pair of Swetaparna Panda & Rutaparna Panda also bowed out from their respective events. Kashyap exited in the qualifiers second round, while the Panda pair crashed out in the main draw first round.
