Canada Open 2023: PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen reach second round

Star Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen reached the second round in the Canada Open following straight-game wins over their respective opponents in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event at Markin-MacPhail Center in Calgary.

Fourth-seeded Sindhu eased past Canada's Talia Ng by a scoreline of 21-16 21-9 in the women's singles opening round match that lasted for 36 minutes on Court 1. The two-time Olympic medal-winning Indian shuttler will next face Natsuki Nidaira of Japan in the pre-quarterfinals later on Thursday (July 6).

Sen, meanwhile, had to fight hard to stun second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand by a scoreline of 21-18 21-15 in the men's singles first round match that lasted for 38 minutes. The Commonwealth Games 2022 gold winner will next face Ygor Coelho of Brazil.

While Sindhu and Sen progressed on Wednesday (July 5) night, it was curtains for former champion B Sai Praneeth as he lost via straight games 12-21 17-21 to Coelho. Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also exited in the first round, losing 12-21 3-21 against Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the women's singles.

Earlier on Tuesday (July 4), Parupalli Kashyap and women's doubles pair of Swetaparna Panda & Rutaparna Panda also bowed out from their respective events. Kashyap exited in the qualifiers second round, while the Panda pair crashed out in the main draw first round.

Sindhu, Sen and the men's doubles pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will be seen in action later in the day. Krishna and Vishnuvardhan, who won on the opening day, are up against second seeded Indonesian combination of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
