Carolina Marin Announces Retirement: Badminton Legend Ends Career Due to Injury

Spain's legendary badminton star, Carolina Marin, has officially called time on her illustrious career, announcing her retirement through a crisp and emotional social media post. Widely regarded as one of the most successful women's singles shuttlers in the history of the sport, Marin steps away from the court after a gruelling, years-long battle with recurrent knee injuries.

The 2016 Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Champion shared her decision with her fans on Thursday, expressing deep gratitude for the support she received throughout her phenomenal career.

"My path ends here. Thank you all, because you've also been part of it. In this new chapter, I will carry with me the values that have guided me so far, and I will try to give back to society everything it has given me over the years. It has been a wonderful journey," Marin wrote in her announcement.

The Toll of Recurrent Injuries

Over her career, she endured multiple severe knee surgeries. Fans will distinctly remember the heartbreak of the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she was leading China's He Bingjiao in the semi-finals before tragically collapsing on the court in agony.

Earlier in February, Marin had opened up about undergoing a third surgery on her right knee and a first on her left knee. Reflecting on her physical struggles, she shared:

"If matches are battles, these are my war wounds. Every scar holds a lesson, but it also reminds of a hard time."

Despite pushing herself through gruelling plyometric sessions as recently as March 8 in an attempt to launch yet another comeback, the physical demands ultimately proved to be one too many. Seeking a better quality of life, the champion emphasised the importance of a pain-free existence.

"I have lived with pain for many years, now I seek happiness in something that may seem simple but to me means everything - living my day to day without pain in my knees," she explained.
