In a thrilling all-Indian encounter at the China Open 2025 badminton tournament held in Changzhou, 17-year-old rising star Unnati Hooda stunned two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu to secure her place in the women's singles quarterfinals.
The match showcased the clash of India's emerging talent against its seasoned champion. Hooda, ranked 35th globally, started strong with a commanding 21-16 win in the first game, displaying excellent court awareness and tactical maturity. Sindhu fought back fiercely in the second game, edging out Hooda 21-19 in a tense finish to level the match.

However, in the deciding game, Hooda maintained composure and dominated with a 21-13 victory, sealing the match after 76 minutes of intense play. The win marked Hooda's first-ever triumph over Sindhu and made her the youngest Indian woman to reach the China Open quarterfinals. Hooda had earlier defeated Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour and will now face Japan's World No. 4 and third seed Akane Yamaguchi in the quarters.
On the men's side, the Indian doubles pair Satwik Sankar Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the quarterfinals. In men's singles, HS Prannoy played against World No. 6 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei but concluded his campaign after a hard-fought encounter.
Hooda will now face World No. 4 and third seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals. In Men's Doubles, Satwik-Chirag will take on Malaysia's Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in their quarterfinal clash.
