China Open 2025: HS Prannoy Saves 5 Match Points in Epic Comeback Win; Lakshya Bows Out

Changzhou, July 22: Indian shuttler HS Prannoy displayed nerves of steel and immense resilience to pull off a thrilling victory against Japan's Koki Watanabe in the first round of the China Open Super 1000 tournament in Changzhou on Tuesday (July 22).

Prannoy, ranked 35th in the world, saved five match points in the final game to clinch an 8-21, 21-16, 23-21 win over world No. 18 Watanabe.

The match began on a dismal note for the Indian, who was completely outplayed in the first game. But Prannoy, known for his fighting spirit, bounced back strongly in the second game with improved control and better movement. The real drama, however, unfolded in the decider.

Trailing 2-11 at the mid-game interval and later facing 15-20 with Watanabe on the brink of victory, Prannoy launched a sensational fightback. He reeled off five straight points, saving all match points and eventually sealing the match 23-21 in a gripping finale.

"At this point in my career, every win matters," Prannoy said after the win. "The average age in men's singles has suddenly dropped to 22-23. A lot of fresh faces, new games, and it's tough being a veteran out there. I'm happy to be back on tour."

A former top-10 player and 2023 World Championships bronze medallist, Prannoy has faced injury setbacks and inconsistency in recent times but continues to prove his mettle in high-pressure matches.

However, it was a disappointing outing for Lakshya Sen, who, despite winning the first game, crashed out against China's fifth seed Li Shi Feng. Sen lost 21-14, 22-24, 11-21, failing to capitalise on a promising start.

In other matches, Anupama Upadhyay was eliminated in the women's singles opening round, losing to Lin Hsiang Ti of Chinese Taipei in three games: 23-21, 11-21, 10-21.

The day also saw a string of early exits for Indian mixed doubles pairs. Both A Surya / A Pramuthesh and Rohan Kapoor / Ruthvika Gadde lost their opening round encounters, continuing a frustrating run for India in the doubles discipline.

As the China Open progresses, all eyes will remain on HS Prannoy, who once again reminded everyone why he's still one of India's most gritty and dependable shuttlers.
