Talented shuttler Malvika Bansod continued her impressive run by advancing to her first-ever Super 1000 quarterfinal, securing a hard-fought victory against the higher-ranked Kristy Gilmour in the China Open, held in Changzhou on Thursday (September 19).
Malvika battled for over an hour, overcoming the world number 25 and two-time Commonwealth Games medallist from Scotland in a thrilling women's singles round-of-16 match. The final score stood at 21-17, 19-21, 21-16 in favour of the 22-year-old Nagpur shuttler.

She becomes only the second Indian women's singles player, after P.V. Sindhu, to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open S1000 in the World Tour era.
Expressing her excitement, Malvika shared, "Reaching the quarterfinals of a Super 1000 tournament is a dream come true. It's the biggest achievement of my career so far." She added that she had visualized this moment before the tournament and was thrilled to have made it into the top 8.
Reflecting on the match, Malvika, who now leads Gilmour 3-2 in head-to-head contests, acknowledged the challenges posed by the court conditions. "There was a lot of drift, especially in the second and last games, making it difficult to control. But I'm grateful I managed to win," she said.
The victory followed Malvika's win against Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, a bronze medallist at the Paris Olympics. She attributed her recent success to improved strength and enhanced control over the shuttle, allowing her to adapt to the tricky conditions.
Looking ahead, Malvika is set to face her biggest challenge yet-fourth-seed and two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals. Despite Yamaguchi holding a 2-0 lead in their previous encounters, Malvika remains optimistic: "I'm in good form and will give my best."
