Earlier in the first round, the 2023 U.S. Open badminton champion defeated Natsuki Nidaira via straight games in a closely contested match that ended 23-21, 21-13 in favour of the shuttler from Thailand.

Now, Sindhu will face an opponent she has met five times so far in the form of Katethong. The Indian edges the Thai 3-2 in the head-to-head battles. In the most recent outing, however, the Thai shuttler beat the Indian shuttler in the 2023 Indian Open.
