Grand Prix badminton tournament in April

By Staff

New Delhi, Jan 7 (UNI) Top shuttlers of the world will be seen in action in the 130,000 US Dollar prize money Grand Prix Badminton tournament to be held in Hyderabad from April 1 to 6.

The Grand Prix badminton event, the first to be held in the country, will also carry qualification points for Beijing Olympics.

The tournament was earlier slated to be held in Hyderabad in September last year but was postponed after the bomb blasts in that city.

According to Badminton Association of India President V K Verma ''This will be the last qualification tournament for the Beijing Olympics.

''There are already 10 Grand Prix tournaments carrying Olympic qualification points but IBF has added this tournament to the list and we are thankful for this.'' Verma also said the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad has come up with excellent facilities and IBF has decided to make it an international training centre.

''IBF is satisfied with the centre and they will make it into a world training centre. Players from other countries will come to train and there will be quality trainers and other sporting facilities available,'' he said.

Verma said the BAI will take strict measures to sort out the over-age issue among junior players and ''those players and Associations will be strictly dealt if any player is found guilty of hiding his or her age.'' ''Players will be subjected to medical examination and if they are found overage, they will be banned from training for a year,'' he added.
