Hong Kong Open 2023: Indian Challenge Ends As Tanisha-Ashwini & Treesa-Gayatri Crash Out In Second Round

Indian challege at the Hong Kong Open 2023 ended on Thursday (September 14) after the only remaining players from the country crashed out in the pre-quarterfinal stage at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hong Kong.

Women's doubles pairs of Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa and Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand suffered straight games defeats in their respective second round matches to bow out of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 series tournament.

Tanisha-Ashwini pair, who reached the second round as qualifiers, lost to the top seed Japanese pair of Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara by a scoreline of 18-21, 7-21 in the women's doubles pre-quarterfinal match that took place on Court 3 and lasted for 38 minutes.

Earlier, Crasto and Ponnappa had moved into the main draw with a straight games (21-16, 21-14) win over compatriots Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sunil before seeing off Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun by a scoreline of 21-19, 21-19 to reach the round of 16.

Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallists Treesa-Gayatri pair, on the other hand, went down in straight games to seventh seed pair of Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia by a scoreline of 8-21, 14-21 in 36 minutes on Court 2.

In the round of 32, Jolly and Gopichand pair, who are part of the Indian Asian Games 2023 squad, defeated Dutch pair Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen in a tough first round match by a scoreline of 21-15, 16-21, 21-16.

Earlier on Wednesday (September 13), top Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen withdrew from the tournament before his men's singles opening round match, handing his opponent, Chinese Taipei's Su Li Yang, a walkover.

Commonwealth Games champion Sen, seeded eighth in men's singles, was India's top ranked singles player at the Hong Kong Open 2023 with the other top Indian shuttlers like PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth skipping the Super 500 tournament.

Apart from Sen's withdrawal, three other Indian singles shuttlers - Priyanshu Rajawat, Akarshi Kashyap and Malvika Bansod, lost their opening round matches to end the Indian singles challenge at the event.

Meanwhile, three other doubles pairs - Sikki Reddy-Rohan Kapoor, B Sumeeth Reddy-Ashwini Ponnappa and Krishna Prasad Garaga-Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala also crashed out following defeats in their respective matches.
