HS Prannoy Takes Indefinite Break from Badminton to Focus on Health Recovery

By Rishab V M

India's ace men's singles shuttler, HS Prannoy, has announced an indefinite hiatus from badminton to concentrate on his recovery from a recent illness.

The 32-year-old shuttler made this decision public through a statement on his social media accounts on August 26, following his early exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he was knocked out in the Round of 16 by fellow Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen.

HS Prannoy Health Update

Prannoy's decision to step away from the sport comes after a challenging period in which he contracted Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral illness, shortly before the Paris Olympics. The effects of the illness were evident in his performance at the Games, where he struggled with physical discomfort and fatigue, ultimately losing to Sen in straight sets, 21-12, 21-6.

The toll that Chikungunya took on his body, particularly in the form of persistent pain, has made it difficult for him to compete at his usual high level, prompting his decision to prioritize his health over immediate competition.

While Prannoy has not specified the exact tournaments he will miss or the duration of his break, it is likely that he will be absent from major upcoming events, including the Hong Kong Open 2024 (Super 500) from September 10-15 and the China Open 2024 (Super 1000) from September 17-22.

In his social media post, Prannoy expressed the difficulties he has faced due to the illness: "Unfortunately, the battle with Chikungunya has taken a toll on my body, leaving me with persistent pains that make it impossible to compete at my best."

He went on to explain that after careful deliberation with his team, he has decided to withdraw from upcoming tournaments to focus on his recovery. "Thank you for your understanding and support during this challenging time. I'll be back stronger," he added, reassuring his fans and supporters that he intends to return to the court in better shape.

HS Prannoy has been a standout performer for India in men's singles badminton over the past Olympic cycle. He played a crucial role in India's historic Thomas Cup victory in 2022 and has continued to excel on the international stage, securing bronze medals at the 2023 World Badminton Championships and the 2022 Asian Games. His consistent performances have seen him rise to a career-high world No. 6 ranking in September 2023, making him one of the top contenders in men's singles globally.

Despite his recent setback at the Paris Olympics, where he was seeded 13th, Prannoy showed his class by advancing to the knockout stages with two commanding wins in the group phase at the La Chapelle Arena. However, the lingering effects of Chikungunya hampered his ability to perform at his best, leading to his defeat in the pre-quarterfinals.

As India's top-ranked men's singles player, Prannoy's contributions to Indian badminton have been significant, and his decision to take time off for recovery is a prudent move to ensure his long-term health and performance.
