Independence Day 2023, Sporting Moments: India will complete 76 years of Independence this year on August 15. Here we take a look at some of the iconic sporting achievements, starting with a first-ever doubles medal in a marquee badminton event.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa created a significant milestone in Indian badminton history when they achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first-ever Indian pair to secure a medal at the World Championship.

This momentous occasion took place during the prestigious World Championships held in London in 2011, where they showcased their exceptional skills and determination to clinch the bronze medal in the women's doubles category.
Their outstanding performance not only brought immense pride to themselves but also elevated India's reputation on the global badminton stage. Here is a look at what that win meant and how they clinched the bronze:
En route to their historic win, Jwala and Ashwini stunned the second-seeded Chinese Taipei pair Hsing Cheng and Yu Chin Chien in the second round before overcoming Hong Kong pair Poon Lok Yan and Tse Ying Suet in the third round.
The Indian duo also defeated the Indonesian pair of Vita Marrisa and Nadya Melati in the quarterfinals. They, however, lost to a fifth-seeded Chinese pair of Tian Qing and Zhao Yun Lei in the semifinals. But sealed a bronze medal, having reached the semis.
The first medal, a bronze, was won by an Indian at the World Championship was by the legendary Prakash Padukone in the men's singles in 1983. Since Gutta-Ponnappa medal, several other Indians have won a medal at the Badminton World Championships.
Their victory at the World Championship was a proud moment for Indian badminton. Pullela Gopichand, former All England champion and coach, had predicted their success before the event. The duo proved that they were a force to reckon with at the highest level.
The Jwala Gutta-Ashwinin Ponnappa partnership continued its success even after their historic win. They went on to win bronze at other prestigious tournaments such as Asian Games, Uber Cup, and Commonwealth Games. They also represented India in two Olympic Games.
