By MyKhel Staff

Lakshya Sen was the lone Indian shuttler, entering the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open 2024 with a straight games win over Japan's Kenta Nishimoto at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday (June 6).

Paris Olympics-bound Sen, who had got past another Japanese in the first round, eased to a 21-9, 21-15 win over Nishimoto in the men's singles second round match that lasted 45 minutes on court 1.

The 22-year-old will next face fourth seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the quarterfinals on Friday (June 7). Sen will hope for a better ouctome against a Danish shuttler after going down to Viktor Axelsen last week in the Singapore Open first round.

While Sen progressed to the next round in Jakarta, it was curtains for the rest of the Indian contingent - three doubles teams and one more singles shuttler at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament on Thursday (June 6).

In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand went down to Japan's Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara 21-19, 19-21, 19-21 after an intense Round-of-16 match.

Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also exited the tournament, bringing an end to India's campaign in the women's doubles. Tanisha and Ashwini were beaten by South Korea's Ha Na Baek and So-Hee Lee 21-13, 19-21, 21-13.

Later in the day, the Indian mixed doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy also crashed out in the second round to China's Siwei Zheng and Yaqiong Huang 21-9, 21-11 in a lop-sided contest.

In the men's singles, Priyansh Rajawat fought well against Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, the reigning world champion and the gold medallist in last year's World Championships. Rajawat eventually lost 10-21, 17-21.

After a meek first game, the Indian punched above his weight in the second game, tailing his superior opponent closely till 17-15. But the Thai man captured the remaining four points without much fuss to win the match.

Earlier in the opening round, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy made early exits following upset defeats in their respective matches. Akarshi Kashyap and Rutaparna Panda-Swetaparna Panda also bowed out in the first round.
