India's PV Sindhu crashed out in the opening round of the Indonesia Open 2024 following defeat to Chinese Taipei's Hsu Wen-chi at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday (June 5).

The two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu went down 15-21, 21-15, 14-21 to the world number 25 Chinese Taipei shuttler in the women's singles first round match that lasted an hour and 10 minutes on court 2.

Paris Olympics-bound Sindhu fought back from a game down to force the decider, but the lower ranked Hsu controlled the third game to seal the match and booked a second-round meeting with fourth seed Carolina Marin of Spain.

A former World Champion Sindhu, who reached her first final since over a year in last month's Malaysia Masters 2024, could only finish as runner up in that title showdown against Wang Zhi Yi of China.

Earlier on Wednesday (June 5), the women's doubles team of Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda lost in the opening round to South Korea's Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong by a scoreline of 12-21, 9-21.

Later in the day, another women's singles shuttler in Akasrhi Kashyap and women's doubles team of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa will be playing their respective openers.

On Tuesday (June 4), another Paris Olympics-bound shuttler crashed out in the opening round of the Indonesia Open 2024 as HS Prannoy went down in straight games to compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat by a scoreline of 17-21, 12-21.

It was also curtains for Kiran George from the men's singles event, but not before he gave a tough fight to Hong Yang Weng of China in the three-game contest that finished 21-11 10-21 20-22.

However, Lakshay Sen also joined Rajawat in progressing as he entered the men's singles second round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament with a straight-game win over Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama with a 21-12 21-17 win in 40 minutes.

In the men's singles second round matches on Thursday (June 6), Sen will face Japan's Kenta Nishimoto, while Rajawat will take on Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.

In mixed doubles, the pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy had to battle hard before prevailing 18-21 21-16 21-17 over the American pair of Vinson Chiu and Jennie Gai in the opening round. They will next face top seeds Si Wei Zheng and Ya Qiong Huang of China.

In women's doubles, the in-form pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand eased past Chinese Taipei's Yu-Pei Cheng and Yu Hsing Sun with a straight games 21-15, 21-11 win to seal a second round meeting with Japanese duo Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Naghara.
