Indonesia Open 2026 Ayush Shetty Stuns World No 15 Weng Hong Yang Rohan-Ruthvika March Into Pre-Quarterfinals

Ayush Shetty Shows Remarkable Fightback

The Thomas Cup 2026 bronze medallist endured a difficult start against Weng, losing the opening game 8-21 as the Chinese shuttler dominated proceedings.

However, the young Indian displayed tremendous resilience in the second game. After building an early 8-4 lead, Ayush saw Weng fight back and eventually reach game point at 20-19.

With the match hanging in the balance, Ayush produced three consecutive points from 19-20 down to snatch the game 22-20 and force a decider.

The momentum completely shifted thereafter. The Indian established a healthy six-point cushion in the third game and never allowed Weng back into the contest, sealing a memorable victory after one hour and six minutes of intense badminton.

The result marked Ayush's second consecutive victory over Weng, having previously defeated the Chinese player during the Thomas Cup earlier this year.

Ayush will next face Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu, who caused a major upset by defeating fourth seed Christo Popov.

Rohan-Ruthvika Produce Upset Win

India's mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani also delivered an impressive performance against world No.20 pair Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang.

The Indian duo dominated from the outset, controlling rallies and maintaining pressure throughout the contest. Their aggressive approach paid dividends as they wrapped up a convincing 21-14, 21-14 victory in just 34 minutes.

The win sets up a challenging pre-quarterfinal clash against defending champions Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France.

Tough Challenges Await Indian Contingent

India's campaign continues on Thursday with several high-profile matches.

In women's singles, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faces one of the toughest tests in world badminton when she takes on reigning world No.1 An Se Young.

Meanwhile, men's doubles pair Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi Arjun will face Malaysia's Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai.

The Malaysian pair progressed after Indian stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were forced to retire during their opening-round match due to an injury sustained by Satwik.

Positive Signs For Indian Badminton

Ayush's victory over a top-15 opponent once again underlined his growing stature on the international circuit. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2026 and continues to establish himself among India's most promising men's singles players.

The success of Rohan and Ruthvika also provides encouragement in mixed doubles, an event where India has been striving for greater consistency on the world stage.

With multiple Indians still in contention, the Indonesia Open remains an important opportunity for the country's shuttlers to build momentum ahead of a packed international calendar.
