Japan Masters 2024: Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand Pair Crash Out in The First Round

By MyKhel Staff

Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand crashed out early in the ongoing Japan Masters 2024 following straight games defeat in the women's singles opener at the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium in Kumamoto, Japan on Tuesday (November 12).

The world No 20 Indian pair was brushed aside 16-21, 16-21 by Chinese Taipei pair Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Yin-Hui, ranked 24, in just 36 minutes in their women's doubles round 32 of clash of the Super 500 tournament.

The Indian duo trailed Lin Jhih Yun and Hsu Yin Hui 7-4 in the opening game, but fought back to draw level at 8-8. However, the Chinese Taipei pair seized control with six consecutive points and clinched the first game 21-16.

In the second game, the Chinese Taipei pair led by five points at 12-7. The Indian pair once again fought back to draw level with five straight points, but the Yin-Hui and Jhih-Yun produced a strong finish to seal the match and spot in the second round.

This is the first time Yin-Hui and Jhih-Yun have won against the Indian duo, who still lead the head-to-head contests 2-1 against the Chinese Taipei pair. Jolly and Gopichand had got the better of the Chinese Taipei pair in the Macau Open and German Open earlier this year.

The Indian duo, however, dropped their first match against the world number 24 duo of Yin-Hui and Jhih-Yun, who will now head to the second round, where they will face second seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China on Thursday (November 14)

While the lone doubles pair from India has exited, the two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and world championship medallist Lakshya Sen are the two other shuttlers from the country competing in the tournament and will begin their campaign on Wednesday (November 13).

A former World Champion Sindhu, who has struggled overall this year on the BWF World Tour, will open her women's singles campaign against eighth-seeded Thai Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

The 23-year-old Sen, on the other hand, will open against Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao, with a potential showdown against eighth seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia in the next round.
