Japan Open 2023: Satwik-Chirag, Sen into Quarterfinals as Prannoy beats Srikanth in all-India pre-quarters

Tokyo, July 27: Top Indian doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty continued their triumphant run with yet another straight games win to reach the Japan Open 2023 men's doubles quarterfinal at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium on Thursday (July 27).

Fresh from their Korea Open triumph, the third-seeded pair Satwik-Chirag defeated Denmark pair Jeppe Bay and Lasse Molhede by 21-17, 21-11 in the second round match that lasted for 36 minutes.

The Indian pair, who have won three titles on the BWF World Tour this year, will next face Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Yang & Wang Chi-lin in the last eight match on Friday (July 28).

In men's singles Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy booked their last eight spots via contrasting wins. While Sen defeated Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama in straight games 21-14, 21-16 in 50 minutes, Prannoy came from a game down to oust compatriot Kidambi Srikanth 18-21, 21-19, 21-19 in 57 minutes.

Sen, the Canada Open champion, will face another Japanese Koki Watanabe in the quarterfinals, while Prannoy will face the winner of the pre-quarterfinal between top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Indonesia's Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the last eight.

Apart from Srikanth, the women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayathri Gopichand also bowed out in the second round of the BWF Super 750 tournament. The Indian pair suffered straight games loss to Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan by scoreline of 21-23, 19-21.

Earlier on Wednesday (July 26), two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu as well as Mithun Manjunath, Malvika Bansod and doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun crashed out in the first round of their respective events.
