Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand crashed out of the Madrid Spain Masters 2024 tournament following a defeat in the women's doubles opener on Tuesday (March 26).

The fifth-seeded Indian pair Treesa-Jolly went down fighting against USA's Annie Xu and Kerry Xu by a scoreline of 18-21, 22-20, 18-21 in 61 minutes on court 1 at the Centro Deportivo Municipal Gallur in Madrid, Spain.

The Indian pair had beaten the American pair in the first round of last week's Swiss Open 2024, where they made a quarterfinal exit. And with the latest opening round loss, Jolly and Gopichand, currently ranked 26th, are unlikely to make the cut for Paris Olympics.

The other women's doubles pair competing at the BWF Super 300 tournament and still alive in the race for Paris 2024, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa received a walkover in the first round. The Indian pair will next face Tiffany Ho and Gronya Somerville of Australia.

While Treesa-Jolly pair made an early exit, the men's doubles pairs Krishna Prasad Garaga-Sai Pratheek K, and Dhruv Kapila-MR Arjun progressed to the second round after contrasting wins in the opening round on Tuesday (March 26).

Krishna and Sai Pratheek registered a 21-15, 28-30, 21-11 win over Canada's Adam Dong and Nyl Yakura, while eighth seeds Arjun and Dhruv secured straight games 21-18, 21-17 win over Mexico's Job Castillo and Luis Montoya.

Krishna-Sai will next face France's Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov in the men's doubles second round on Thursday (March 28), when the duo of Arjun and Kapila will take on Scotland's Grimley twins - Christopher and Matthew.

Earlier in the day, Sameer Verma, Sankar Subramanian and Aadya Variyath failed to qualify for the main draw after losing in the qualification round. Mithun Manjunath, on the other hand, secured a spot in the main draw.

On Wednesday (March 27), top Indian singles shuttlers like PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth will open their campaign in the women's and men's singles categories respectively.

Kiran George, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, Manjunath and Ashmita Chaliha also will be in singles action, while Sathish will pair with Aadya in mixed doubles opener, and so will the pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy.
