Malaysia Open 2024: Satwik-Chirag Lose To Top Seeds In Title Clash

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty missed out on their second BWF Super 1000 title after the top Indian doubles pair went down to top seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China in the Malaysia Open 2024 final at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

The second seeded Indian pair, who started the title clash well, suffered a 21-9, 18-21, 17-21 loss to the first-seeded Chinese pair in the men's doubles final that lasted for 58 minutes on Court 1.

Rankireddy and Shetty eased past the number one seeds Wang and Liang in the opening game by a scoreline of 21-9. But, the Chinese pair fought back and forced the decider by edging the second game 21-18.

In the decider, Shetty and Rankireddy raced to a 11-7 lead at the interval before the Chinese drew level at 13-13 just after the interval and carried the momentum to take the game and the title with a 21-17 win.

This result also meant that the Chinese duo increased their advantage to 4-1 in their head to head record against the Indian pair. This was the Indian duo's eleventh title clash on the BWF Tour since they made their appearance as a pair in 2018. Satwik-Chirag have lost four finals so far.

Earlier in the semi-finals on Saturday (January 13), Rankireddy and Shetty pair came back from 11-18 down in the second game to win and claim a 21-18, 22-20 victory over the world champions Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae of Korea.

At the Malaysia Open 2024, there were four other champions crowned apart from the men's doubles as there were winners in four other finals - men's and women's singles as well as women's and mixed doubles. Here is a look at the Malaysia Open Winners List from 2024:
