Malaysia Open 2025: HS Prannoy, Malvika Bansod, Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto Enter Second Round

India's HS Prannoy, Malvika Bansod, Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran-Aadya Variyath pairs advanced to the second round of the Malaysia Open 2025 after winning their respective singles and doubles opening round matches in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (January 8).

Prannoy overcame a day's delay caused by a leaky roof to eliminate Canadian Brian Yang 21-12, 17-21, 21-15 in the men's singles contest of the BWF Super 1000 meet that lasted an hour and 29 minutes on court 3 at the Axiata Arena.

Prannoy will next face Chinese seventh seed Shi Feng Li, who ousted fellow Indian Priyanshu Rajawat in the men's singles opener by a scoreline of 21-11, 21-16 in 39 minutes also on court 3. Rajawat joins Lakshya Sen in making an early exit from the badminton tournament.

Malvika, on the other hand, breezed past local favourite Goh Jin Wei 21-15, 21-16 in the women's singles opener that lasted just 45 minutes. She will face the winner of Chinese third seed Han Yue on Thursday (January 9).

Meanwhile, Kapila and Crasto defeated South Korea's Sung Hyun Ko and Hye Won Eom 21-13, 21-14 in the mixed doubles opening round. They will face seventh seeded Chinese pair Xing Cheng and Chi Zhang in the last-16.

Sathish and Aadya defeated compatriots Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh 21-13 21-15 to set up a pre-quarters clash against fourth seed Soon Huat Goh and Shevon Jemie Lai of the host country.

In women's doubles, however, the Panda sisters - Rutaparna and Swetaparna went down in straight games against Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard of Thailand by a scoreline of 17-21, 10-21.

Eighth seeds Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also made an early exit following straight games loss in the women's doubles opener. Tanisha-Ashwini went down 21-23, 12-21 against Misaki Matsutomo and Chiharu Shida of Japan.

Later in the day, men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will open their campaign against Lu Ming-che and Tang Kai-wei of Chinese Taipei, while women's singles shuttlers Anupama Upadhyaya and Akarshi Kashyap also will be in action.
