Paris, Sep 2: Indian para-shuttlers Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass added to India's impressive medal tally at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, securing silver and bronze respectively in the women's singles SU5 category.

This achievement marks a historic day for Indian para badminton, as the nation celebrates its best-ever performance at the Paralympic Games in the sport.

Paris 2024 Paralympics Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass Shine with Medals in Women s Singles SU5

Thulasimathi, a 22-year-old from Tamil Nadu, fought valiantly in the final but was overpowered by China's defending champion Yang Qiuxia, losing 17-21, 10-21 in straight sets. Despite the loss, Thulasimathi's silver medal is a testament to her dedication and resilience, having overcome significant physical challenges to reach this stage.

On the other hand, 19-year-old Manisha Ramadass displayed grit and determination in the bronze medal match, defeating Denmark's Cathrine Rosengren 21-12, 21-8. Manisha's performance was particularly inspiring as she bounced back strongly after a disappointing semifinal loss, channeling her frustration into a dominant victory.

Thulasimathi Murugesan: A Journey of Perseverance

Thulasimathi's journey to the Paralympic podium is a story of courage and determination. Born with a congenital deformity that left her without a thumb on her left hand, she faced additional challenges due to a severe injury that further limited the mobility of her left hand.

Despite these obstacles, Thulasimathi's passion for badminton was evident from a young age. She began playing at the age of five and, under the guidance of her father, D Murugesan, who coached her for five years, she transitioned into para sports-a move that changed her life.

Her talent quickly became apparent on the national and international stages. Thulasimathi's rise in para badminton was marked by several significant achievements, including three medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games, where she clinched gold in the women's singles. Her silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics cements her status as one of India's brightest para athletes.

Reflecting on her silver medal, Thulasimathi expressed a mix of emotions: "I'm happy with the silver, but a bit disappointed that I couldn't give my best. I made a lot of mistakes, especially in the first set, and that cost me the match. But I'm proud to have represented my country and to have reached this stage."

Manisha Ramadass: A Rising Star

Manisha Ramadass, a 19-year-old from Tamil Nadu, has quickly made a name for herself in the para badminton world. Born with Erb's Palsy, a condition that affects her right arm, Manisha has faced her share of challenges. However, her determination and hard work have seen her rise through the ranks of international para badminton, culminating in her bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Manisha's journey to the Paralympics was fueled by her desire to prove herself on the world stage. After a disappointing semifinal loss, she was determined to leave Paris with a medal. In the bronze medal match against Denmark's Cathrine Rosengren, Manisha played with confidence and aggression, securing a convincing 21-12, 21-8 victory.

Elated with her performance, Manisha said, "I'm very happy. I'm on cloud nine. Yesterday was tough, but I used that disappointment to fuel my game today. This bronze is special, but I know I can do better. I'll work even harder for the next four years to change the color of this medal."

India's Historic Day at the Paris 2024 Paralympics

The achievements of Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass are part of a larger success story for India at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Alongside their medals, India also celebrated Kumar Nitesh's gold in the men's singles SL3 category and Suhas L Yathiraj's silver in the men's singles SL4. This brings India's total medal count in para badminton to four, marking a historic day for the nation.

India's para badminton team has demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and sportsmanship at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The performances of Thulasimathi and Manisha not only highlight their individual talent but also showcase the growing strength of para badminton in India.
