Paris 2024: 'Deleted' Why Lakshya Sen Loses Points Despite His Olympic Debut Victory? How it Impacts His Medal Chances?

By MyKhel Staff

In an unexpected turn of events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Lakshya Sen's debut win has been nullified following the withdrawal of Guatemala's Kevin Cordon due to an elbow injury. Follow our elaborated Paris Olympics coverage

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) made the announcement on Sunday, stating that all results involving Cordon in Group L are now considered deleted as per their General Competition Regulations for group stage play.

Laksya Sen Paris Olympics

Cordon, who was a semi-finalist in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, faced Sen in his opening match on Saturday. Sen secured a straight games victory with scores of 21-8 and 22-20. However, this triumph now holds no value in the official records.

The BWF's regulations stipulate that if a player withdraws during the group stage, all their matches are erased from the standings. This rule aims to maintain fairness in the competition, ensuring that the remaining players compete on an equal footing. As a result, Cordon's scheduled matches against Indonesia's third seed Jonathan Christie and Belgium's Julien Carragi are also cancelled.

Will Lakshya Lose Points that He Won?

For Lakshya Sen, this development presents a significant challenge. With his win against Cordon nullified, he loses the point he had earned. Now, to advance to the knockout stages, Sen must secure victories in his remaining group matches.

He will face Julien Carragi on Monday and Jonathan Christie on Wednesday. The pressure is undoubtedly mounting on the young Indian shuttler as these matches will determine his fate in the tournament.

Cordon's withdrawal has effectively turned Group L into a three-player group. The revised group dynamics mean each match now carries even greater significance. Jonathan Christie, being a higher-seeded player, poses a formidable challenge for Sen, while Carragi's unpredictable play adds another layer of complexity to the group.

As Sen prepares for his upcoming matches, he will need to harness his determination and skill to overcome this setback. The young shuttler's journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics has taken an unforeseen twist, but with his talent and perseverance, he remains a strong contender to make a significant impact on the world stage. All eyes will be on him as he strives to secure his place in the knockout rounds and keep his Olympic dreams alive.
