India's contingent for the Paris Olympics consists of 117 athletes competing in 16 sports disciplines. This includes 70 men and 47 women, all vying for glory across 69 events. Sharath Kamal, the most experienced athlete among them, will have the honour of being the flag bearer at the opening ceremony with PV Sindhu, which is set to take place at 11:30 PM IST on Friday, July 26.

Sharath Kamal: A Veteran and Leader

Sharath Kamal is a stalwart of Indian table tennis. As a Commonwealth Games champion and India's top-ranked men's singles table tennis player, he currently holds the 40th position in the world rankings. His leadership and experience will be crucial for the Indian team in Paris.

Expressing his excitement, Sharath Kamal shared, "So, waiting for the 26th of July, when we'll be leading the Indian contingent and the opening ceremony in Paris. So, it's been a moment which, you know, since the last 3-4 months, I've been dreaming about, visualizing. So, I'm pretty excited that I'm going to live that moment, and especially I'm going to do that with PV Sindhu." He added, "So, it's a fantastic moment, I would say."

PV Sindhu: A Beacon of Hope

PV Sindhu, a former world champion and one of India's most decorated badminton players, will co-lead the Indian contingent with Sharath Kamal. Sindhu secured her spot in the Paris Olympics by finishing 12th on the Race to Paris Ranking List. Her achievements include a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, making her one of India's most celebrated athletes.

PV Sindhu also expressed her joy, stating, "Yes, I'm very happy to be the flag bearer also with our fellow Indian, Sharath Kamal. It's a proud moment for both of us and, of course, it's a one-time opportunity for anyone to, you know, be a flag bearer.

"And, obviously, representing our country, it's at the Olympics, you know, standing there right in the front holding the Indian flag. So, it's a very proud moment for both of us and, of course, he's like a super senior to me. You know, I've known him for a very, very long time, so it's always nice to, you know, be holding a flag with the fellow Indian."

"Yes, Sharath Kamal and I will be holding the flag at the opening ceremony. So I've known Sharath for a very very long time and you know he's been playing amazingly for so many years and you know he's also, I think it will be his fourth or fifth Olympics if I'm not wrong and we will be holding the flag together. So it's really a great moment to be sharing that with another fellow Indian and I'm super proud," she added.
