Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap Announce Separation After Seven Years of Marriage

In a heartfelt message on social media, Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal announced her separation from husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap, bringing an end to their seven-year marriage.

The couple, who have been iconic figures in Indian badminton, decided to part ways with mutual respect and a focus on healing.

"Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing-for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time," Saina shared on her Instagram story.

Their journey began in Hyderabad under the tutelage of Pullela Gopichand, where both trained rigorously during their formative years. The bond between them grew stronger as they supported one another through professional highs and personal challenges.

Saina Nehwal emerged as a trailblazer in Indian sports, capturing the nation's imagination with her quarterfinal appearance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She went on to win bronze at London 2012, becoming the first Indian badminton player to clinch an Olympic medal. Her crowning moment came in 2015, when she became world No. 1-an unprecedented feat for Indian women's badminton.

Kashyap too played a pivotal role in India's rise in the sport. After bagging bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, he became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in 2012. He etched his name in history again with a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Through the 2010s, while Saina continued to bring home medals, Kashyap battled persistent injuries. Despite the setbacks, the couple stayed united-Kashyap missed the 2016 Olympics, but remained Saina's strongest support as she navigated her own struggles.

In 2018, their professional bond deepened, with Kashyap taking on the role of her coach. His technical insights helped guide Saina to gold at the Commonwealth Games that year. The couple married later that year, and in 2024, Kashyap announced his retirement from competitive badminton.

Their separation marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian sports, but their legacy in badminton remains firmly etched.
