South Central Zone men clinch badminton title

Bhopal, Jan 10 (UNI) South Central Zone women and men claimed the LIC carrom and badminton championship titles respectively on the third day of LIC Sports Festival 2006-07 being played at T T Nagar stadium here today.

In a one-sided contest, South Central women, packed with international players, beat South Zone 3-0 in carrom team event. P Nirmala defeated her rival S Lalita 25-0, 25-1, while S Apurva beat N Maithali 25-0, 25-7.

In the men's category, North Central Zone clinched the title by defeating West Zone 2-1.

In the badminton men's team championship, South Central Zone beat West Zone 3-0 to bag the title, while in the women's category West Zone emerged winner beating South Central Zone 2-1.

In the women's table tennis event, West Zone defeated Eastern Zone 3-2 in nail-biting contest, while North Central Zone beat Eastern Zone 3-1 to capture the gold.

The athlectics competition got underway today. In discus throw event, North Zone's Amit Tyagi established a record of the tournament with 48.49 metre demloshing previous title holder West Zone's S B Thakur of 47.28 metre. Meanwhile, Thakur had to contend with the second place at 45.80 metre.
