Saina Nehwal crashes out of Indian Open Super Series

New Delhi, Apr 27: Saina Nehwal crashed out of the first round of Indian Open Super Series badminton tournament (17-21, 19-21) to Japan's Ai Goto in the women's singles first round at the Siri Fort Sports Complex on Wednesday Apr 27.

Saina, who is ranked World No.4, was the spearhead of the Indian attack and a lot depended on him to fructify India's hopes in the tournament. With her loss the challenge of Indian women in the tournament came to an abrupt end as the other five have also crashed out.

A visibly distraught Saina later said, "It was not my day. She was playing so well. I could not read her game. She was good at the net and with half court smashes. She was getting it right with every stroke."

Meawhile the Indian male team in the competition fared better as Sourabh Verma and Gurusai Datt pulled off two big upsets of the day. Earlier in the morning sesssion, Sourabh, a qualifier for te event, shocked Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia 21-18, 21-19.

Later in the day, Datt overcame some anxious moments to clinch a cliff-hanger against world no. 5 and fourth seed Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana 22-20, 18-21, 21-19.

Sourabh who is playing his first super series event was delighted about his achievment and in the post-match interview said, "It is my biggest win. I was not intimidated by his stature. I just wanted to give my best. I am glad that I began with a victory...I moved into Gopichand academy during the Commonwealth Games camp and decided to stay there."

Apart from the duo the only other Indian to proceed in the men's singles was Parupalli Kashyap. He went past Slovakia's Michal Matejka 21-7, 21-15.
