The match, held at the iconic Stade Pierre de Coubertin, saw Suhas battling against the formidable world champion Mazur, who had previously edged him out in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics final. Despite the defeat, Suhas's consistent performance and unwavering spirit earned widespread admiration and solidified his status as one of India's premier para-athletes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led social media to applaud the Karnataka-born athlete on his remarkable achievement. "A spectacular accomplishment as Suhas Yathiraj wins the prestigious Silver medal in the Men's Singles SL4 Badminton event at the #Paralympics2024! India rejoices at his success. We are proud of his tenacity and commitment to sports," posted PM Modi on X.

A Match of Determination and Resilience

Entering the court with the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders, Suhas faced an uphill task against hometown favourite Lucas Mazur. The Frenchman, backed by a passionate crowd, started aggressively, taking an early lead in the first game.

Suhas attempted to counter with strategic plays and swift movements but struggled to find his rhythm against Mazur's relentless attacks, concluding the first game at 9-21.

The second game saw Suhas making adjustments, displaying improved defence and attempting to narrow the gap. However, Mazur maintained his dominance, leveraging his experience and home advantage to close out the match at 13-21.

Despite the loss, Suhas's journey to the final was marked by outstanding performances, including victories over top-seeded players from Japan and Denmark in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. His silver medal contributes significantly to India's medal tally and inspires countless aspiring athletes across the nation.

Making History and Inspiring Millions

With this achievement, Suhas becomes the only Indian shuttler to win medals at both the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics, underscoring his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. His journey from a small town in Karnataka to the global stage of the Paralympics is a testament to his perseverance and unwavering commitment.

India's para-badminton contingent performed admirably at the Paris Games, securing a total of four medals. Alongside Suhas's silver, Kumar Nitesh clinched gold in the men's singles SL3 category, while Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass added silver and bronze in the women's singles SU5 category, respectively.

Born with a congenital deformity in his left ankle, Suhas never allowed his physical challenges to deter his ambitions. An academic prodigy, he graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering from the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surathkal before clearing the civil services examination to become an IAS officer of the 2007 Uttar Pradesh cadre.

Suhas has served with distinction as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, where his leadership and administrative skills have been widely recognised. Balancing his demanding professional responsibilities with his passion for badminton, he has emerged as a role model for millions, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can overcome any obstacle.
