Swiss Open 2025: Indian Challenge Ends After Treesa-Gayatri Lose Women's Doubles Semi-Final

By MyKhel Staff

India's challenge at Swiss Open 2025 badminton tournament ended on Saturday (March 22) after Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a defeat in the women's doubles semi-final against the top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China in Basel, Switzerland.

The fourth seeded Indian pair dropped an opening game advantage to go down in three games contest against the Chinese pair by a scoreline of 21-18, 15-21, 12-21 in the last four clash that lasted an hour and 32 minutes on the main court of St. Jakobshalle.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand

This was Jolly and Gopichand's second defeat in the space of a week, and overall sixth loss in seven meetings with Liu and Tan. The Indian pair had also lost to the Chinese duo last week at the All England Open Badminton Championship in the quarter-final round.

Coming back to the BWF Super 300 tournament semi-final in Basel, it was a closely contested battle as opposed to an almost lopside battle in Birmingham last week. After some energy-sapping rallies, it was the Chinese top pair who emerged winners.

The Indian duo started strong, opening up a 4-1 lead and extending it to 11-6 at the break as Treesa and Gayatri controlled the pace to earn an early advantage in the crucial semi-final contest.

In the second essay, Treesa-Gayatri carried momentum and went 6-3 up, but Liu and Tan fought back to take a 11-7 lead heading into the interval. The Indian pair put up a fight, but could not stop the Chinese duo from a forcing a decider.

In the third and final game, Liu and Tan raced to a 11-6 lead at the break before closing out the match and knocking out their opponents Treesa and Gayatri. With this, the Chinese pair reached their first final of the year, having exited in the semi-final in earlier BWF events.

This result also marked the end of the Indian challenge at the BWF Super 300 tournament, as Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, the lone Indian left in the singles draw, lost 10-21, 14-21 to world number 31 Christo Popov of France, a 2019 World Junior Championships silver medallist on Friday (March 21) night.
