Indian Open 2024: 'Olympic Glory!' Tai Tzu Ying Turns To Final Chapter Of Her Illustrious Career

By Subhashish Sarkar

One of the best players on the world badminton circuit, Tai Tzu Ying, has decided to bid farewell to badminton after the Paris Olympics. She just won the India Open by defeating World No. 2 Chen Yufei in women's singles with scores of 21-12, 21-16 at the IG Stadium, marking the first time the Chinese Taipei superstar has claimed this prestigious title.

A few months ago, The 29-year-old shared her plan to retire after playing in the Paris Olympics. Confirming her decision after the first match at the India Open, she firmly stated, "No more after Paris." This marks the end of a remarkable chapter in her career, adding a touch of finality to her sporting journey.

There was a lot of hype about this final match in the crowd at IG Stadium. The crowd went berserk, continuously chanting "Let's go Tai Tzu Ying Let's Go" and one fan traveled all the way from Bhopal just to watch Tai Tzu Ying. Another reason for this excitement among fans was that it's a repeat of the Tokyo Olympics women's singles final.

The cold in Delhi was breaking people's courage to sit in the stadium, but to watch Tai Tzu Ying's match, people were ready to bear anything. If you were present at the IG Stadium then you know why I'm writing this piece.

"I was feeling a bit nervous, but while I was playing, I got a lot of support from the audience, which made me play well in today's match." Said Tai Tzu Ying, thanking her fans.

In her illustrious career, Tai Tzu Ying won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She has two World Championships medals - silver in 2021 and bronze in 2022, respectively. Additionally, she is a four-time Asian Championships medalist and has won two medals at the Asian Games.

Tai Tzu Ying has set a record by being the top-ranked player for an impressive 214 weeks. Additionally, she has won the All England Open three times, a highly prestigious and historic badminton tournament.

The elusive piece absent from her trophy cabinet is an Olympic medal. In the Rio Olympics, Tai Tzu Ying succumbed to India's PV Sindhu in the round of 16. Then, in the Tokyo Olympics, victory slipped through Tai Tzu Ying's fingers as she narrowly missed a gold medal, falling to Chen Yufei in the finals.

"I will fight for the medal in this year's Olympics. I know the level of difficulty, but I will strive for it." Tai Tzu Ying replied on competing at the Paris Olympics.

Her retirement will have a big impact on the badminton community in Chinese Taipei because she's not just liked by fans, but she's also a pioneer for women athletes wanting to play badminton professionally.

In the final part of her great badminton career, Tai Tzu Ying wants to win an Olympic medal. We're not sure if she'll get gold in the Paris Olympics, but one thing's for sure - her name will always be remembered in badminton history.
