Taipei Open 2023: HS Prannoy eases into quarterfinal; Parupalli Kashyap bows out

Taipei, June 22: HS Prannoy kept India's challenge alive at the Taipei Open 2023 with an easy straight games win over Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto to reach the men's singles quarterfinal on Thursday (June 22) in Taipei, Taiwan.

The third-seeded Indian defeated unseeded Indonesian shuttler 21-9, 21-17 in the second round match that lasted for just 36 minutes on Court 2 at the Tian-mu Arena in University of Taipei.

HS Prannoy

The recent Malaysia Masters champion raced to an easy win 21-9 in the first game, but the Indonesian put up a fight in the second game before going down 17-21. Prannoy will next face Hong Kong's NG Ka Long Angus in the last eight match on Friday (June 23).

Earlier on Thursday (June 22), Parupalli Kashyap bowed out of the men's singles competition following a straight games loss to Chinese Taipei's Su Li Yang. The Indian lost 16-21, 17-21 to the Taiwanese shuttler in the second round match that lasted for 42 minutes on Court 1.

Also crashing out from the tournament were mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy, who lost via straight games to Chinese Taipei pair of Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Lin Xiao Min.

The lone Indian doubles pair that reached the second round suffered a 13-21, 18-21 loss to the Taiwanese pair in the mixed doubles second round match on court 1 that lasted for just 29 minutes.

Meanwhile, Tanya Hemanth, the lone women's singles shuttler from India that advanced to the second round, fell to top seed and home favourite Tai Tzu Ying in just 28 minutes. The Indian suffered a 11-21, 6-21 loss to the former world number one.

Earlier on Wednesday (June 21), Mithun Manjunath, Kiran George, Meiraba Luwang Maisnam, S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, Sathish Kumar, Gadde Ruthvika Shivani, Aakarshi Kashyap and Bokka Navneeth-Priya Konjenbam pair all crashed out in the opening round.
