Tanvi Patri Wins Badminton Asia U17 Girls' Singles Title, Beats Shaina Manimuthu in All-Indian Final

Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patri added another major achievement to her breakthrough 2026 season after clinching the girls' singles U17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships on Sunday.

The second-seeded Indian recovered from a game down to defeat compatriot and sixth seed Shaina Manimuthu 11-15, 15-10, 15-12 in an absorbing all-Indian final.

The continental title caps a remarkable year for the Odisha youngster. Patri claimed her first international title at the Pontianak International Challenge and also won the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru earlier this year. The latest triumph adds to her continental success after she won the Asian U15 title in 2024.

Patri received a first-round bye before overcoming China's Zhou Jing Li 18-16, 12-15, 15-13 in a closely fought opening match. She then beat Japan's Shizuku Kashio 15-9, 15-12 before producing a convincing 15-8, 15-8 quarterfinal victory over China's Lin Heng Men.

In the semifinal, Patri held her nerve in another three-game contest to defeat China's Yu Ying Gui 15-9, 11-15, 15-11 and book her place in the final.

Manimuthu also enjoyed an impressive campaign. After negotiating her way through the draw, she defeated Japan's Yui Itabashi in the quarterfinals before beating Anon Okimoto 15-13, 15-12 in the last four.

Patri's victory ensured India retained the U17 girls' singles crown for a second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar's title-winning campaign in 2025. Manimuthu, the reigning U15 Asian champion, finished with a silver medal.

India also added a bronze in the U15 boys' doubles, with Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma reaching the semifinals before losing 5-15, 10-15 to Chinese Taipei's Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou.
