Tokyo Champion Pramod Bhagat to Miss Paris Paralympics After 18-Month Suspension

By MyKhel Staff

Pramod Bhagat, India's reigning Paralympic champion in badminton, will not compete in the Paris 2024 Paralympics following a suspension due to an anti-doping violation.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that Bhagat has been suspended for 18 months after being found in breach of anti-doping regulations.

The suspension stems from Bhagat's failure to comply with the BWF's whereabouts requirements, which are part of the broader anti-doping framework. On March 1, 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Anti-Doping Division ruled that Bhagat had committed three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period, a serious violation under the BWF's anti-doping rules.

Despite his appeal to the CAS Appeals Division, Bhagat's suspension was upheld on July 29, 2024, effectively sidelining him from the upcoming Paris Paralympics. This decision is a significant setback for the 35-year-old athlete, who had been expected to defend his gold medal in the SL3 category.

Bhagat's absence from the Paris Paralympics marks a profound loss for Indian badminton. He had become a symbol of resilience and excellence in the sport, especially following his outstanding performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. There, Bhagat claimed the gold medal in the men's singles SL3 category, defeating Great Britain's Daniel Bethell in a thrilling final that showcased his tenacity and skill.

The Tokyo victory was a crowning achievement in Bhagat's illustrious career, which also includes four singles world titles in 2015, 2019, 2022, and the Tokyo Paralympics. His dominance in the SL3 category extended beyond singles, as he also secured a gold medal in men's doubles at the 2013 World Championships.

Bhagat's suspension means that he will not be able to defend his titles in Paris, a significant blow to both the athlete and his fans. The ruling underscores the importance of adherence to anti-doping regulations, even for top athletes. As Bhagat faces this challenging period, his legacy as a Paralympic champion remains intact, but the opportunity to add to his accolades will be deferred.
