Indian doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will face China's Li Wen Mei and Liu Xuan Xuan in the quarterfinals of the All England Open Badminton Championships 2023 at the Arena Birmingham in Birmingham, England.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze-winning duo Jolly-Gopichand were the only Indians to keep the Indian challenge alive in Birmingham on Thursday (March 16) as other top shuttlers including Lakshya Sen and men's doubles Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out.

The Indian women's doubles pair scripted a stunning win over former world No. 1 Japanese pair of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota by a scoreline of 21- 14, 24-22 in a pulsating second round contest that lasted for 50 minutes.

Earlier, the world No. 17 Indian duo of Treesa and Gayathri had ousted seventh-seeded Thai pair of Rawinda Prajongjai and Jongkolphan Kititharakul in the opening round match that ended with a score of 21-18, 21-14.

The Chinese pair Wen Mei-Xuan Xuan, on the other hand, got past two Hong Kong pairs in their opening two round matches to reach the last 8 in Birmingham.

This will be the first meeting between the two pairs in any competition and the Indian duo, who had reach the semifinals last year, will look to improve on that feat and go all the way.

Since teaming up in 2021, the Indian pair have made huge strides, playing a big role in India's silver medal finish in the Commonwealth Games mixed team event. The pair also won the bronze in the women's doubles in Birmingham.

The duo won the Odisha Open 2022 and finished runners up in the Syed Modi International Championships 2022. They also reached the semifinal of the All England Open Badminton Championships last year.

This is also the first time they beat the Thai pair of Prajongjai and Kititharakul, having suffered defeats in the four previous attempts.
