Singapore Open 2024: Treesa-Gayatra stun world No.2 pair from South Korea, PV Sindhu loses to Carolina Marin

Rising Indian women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand achieved a significant win at the Singapore Open. They stunned world number two Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea to enter the quarterfinals on Thursday (May 30).

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, ranked 30th globally, overcame the Korean duo 21-9, 14-21, 21-15 in a match lasting close to an hour. This victory marked their first win in three meetings against the Korean pair.

Baek and Lee made errors as Treesa and Gayatri took an 18-9 lead before comfortably securing the opening game. However, the Indians allowed their opponents to bounce back in the second game, committing unforced errors, leading to a deciding third game.

Carolina Marin knocks out PV Sindhu from Singapore Open

PV Sindhu lost to Carolina Marin in a thrilling three-game women's singles pre-quarterfinal clash at the Singapore Open on May 30. Despite holding an 18-15 lead in the decider, Sindhu went down to her familiar foe.

Coming off her runner-up finish at the Thailand Open, Sindhu took the opening game against her Rio Olympics final rival. However, Marin fought back to win 21-13, 11-21, 20-22 in a one-hour, eight-minute battle of the BWF World Tour Super 750 event.

In their first encounter in seven months since the Denmark Open semifinal, Sindhu won five successive points to take the opening game. But Marin, ranked third globally, dominated the second game, winning six points in a row to secure a 17-7 lead.

In the decider, Sindhu maintained her lead before Marin made a strong comeback to clinch her 12th win in 17 matches against Sindhu.

Satwik-Chirag suffered shock first-round defeat

In another upset, the Indian men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced an early exit. They lost in the opening round of the Singapore Open 2024 earlier this week.

The rival pairs, Denmark's world number 34 Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard, exchanged powerful smashes, staying locked at 8-all before the Indian duo took a two-point lead at the final mid-game break. They continued playing aggressively, reeling off six points in succession for a 16-9 lead and sealing a memorable win.

HS Prannoy ousted by Kenta Nishimoto

In men's singles, world number 10 HS Prannoy, seeded eighth, lost to Japan's Kenta Nishimoto, ranked 11th. Prannoy went down 13-21, 21-14, 15-21 in a 45-minute match. This loss marked Prannoy's fourth defeat against Nishimoto in six matches, adding another challenge to his record.
