By MyKhel Staff

India will field its most extensive squad yet for the 3rd edition of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open BWF World Tour Super 750, taking place from January 14-19, 2025. This highly anticipated tournament will feature elite players such as Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen, An Se Young, and world No. 1 Shi Yuqi.

As the event celebrates its third edition, it promises to be a riveting exhibition of talent and skill, combining world-class play with the fervor of dedicated fans.

A flagship event under the Badminton Association of India, the Super 750 tournament, elevated to this level in 2023, is a key part of the BWF World Tour. Participants will compete for a total prize fund of USD 950,000, with the champions earning 11,000 points. Matches will be held at the prestigious KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi.

This edition will see India competing with 21 entries across several categories: Men's singles (3), Women's singles (4), Men's doubles (2), Women's doubles (8), and Mixed doubles (4).

"The 2025 Yonex-Sunrise India Open is a testament to the steady rise of Indian players in the global badminton arena. With so many Indians participating in a Super 750 event, it is a clear sign of the growth and rising prominence of Indian badminton on the international stage. This is just the beginning-2025 will bring forth new names alongside the seasoned stars, while fresh faces will step forward and shine, bringing honor and pride to India. The competition at IG Stadium will showcase the evolving talent of Indian players," said Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India.

In the previous two editions of the Super 750, India had a total of 14 entries each year. Notable performances included Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who reached the men's doubles final, and HS Prannoy, who advanced to the last four in men's singles in 2024.

In 2025, in addition to Chirag-Satwik and Prannoy, India will rely on 2022 men's singles champion Lakshya Sen and former world women's singles champion PV Sindhu, who has also earned two Olympic medals, to contend for the prestigious title.

The level of competition is evident as only two players from the top-20 men's singles rankings will be absent from the New Delhi event, and the women's singles draw will feature 14 of the top-20 players.

As several top doubles players retire post-Paris Olympics or change partners, the doubles categories are expected to produce some unexpected results. However, the spotlight will likely be on Chirag and Satwik, particularly as Satwik returns from an injury hiatus and hasn't competed much since the Olympics.

The men's doubles field will be led by China's Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, who won silver at the Paris Olympics, alongside Malaysia's bronze medalists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Other strong teams include Denmark's Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen, as well as Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
