Benjamin Pritchard Biography

Pritchard studied law at Bangor University, Wales. He later pursued a master's degree in maritime law at the University of Southampton from 2013 to 2014. During his time at Bangor University, he received the Llew Rees Memorial Prize for outstanding sporting achievement.

Sporting Background

Before his accident, Pritchard competed in non-Para cross-country running, triathlon, and cycling. He represented Great Britain in non-Para triathlon at age-group level and competed at the 2013 Sprint Distance World Championships in London, England.

Introduction to Para Rowing

During rehabilitation at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Pritchard was introduced to Para rowing. Initially, he disliked the sport but grew to appreciate it as it allowed him to get out of his wheelchair. This newfound freedom motivated him to pursue rowing more seriously.

Pritchard faced several injuries throughout his career. In early 2023, a cyst in his wrist led to a fracture, requiring a bone graft and two operations. His training was disrupted ahead of the 2021 European Championships due to a back injury and the after-effects of COVID-19. Despite these setbacks, he won silver in the PR1 single sculls at the tournament.

Pritchard made his debut for Great Britain at the 2019 World Championships in Linz, Austria. He has also served as a member of the World Rowing Athletes' Commission. His coach, Nick Baker, has been instrumental in his development as an athlete.
