He studied Administration at Tianjin Open University. Fluent in English and Mandarin, he balances his athletic career with hobbies like music. His son, Yang Zimo, is also a significant part of his life.
After the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, he retired but returned to the national team in 2010. He retired again after the 2012 Paralympic Games in London to become a teacher but resumed his sporting career before the 2015 National Para Games in Sichuan.
Apart from swimming, he wrote a song called "Voice of the Dragon" for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. His passion for music continues to be a significant part of his life.
In 2006, he established the Bozun Education Foundation. He sold his first Paralympic gold medal to help five students with impairments attend school. Additionally, he auctioned other gold medals to raise money for victims of the Sichuan earthquake in 2008.
